Electric cars to run-really cheaper?

I think once it sinks in that with more cars going electric and the need for more generating plants; they are not the big bargain they seem to be now.

From a recent study:
"$38.50 for a Model Y Long Range AWD to drive 1,000 miles per month. Voila!"

Most people drive about 2,000 miles per month. So ball parking it: a gas car that requires two fill ups a month at $50 per will cost $100 to fuel versus, let's round up, $80 for the electric. So to save $20 per month you gotta have a charging station, find one, have hassle, etc. Plus the darn things are much more prone to blowing up on you or running you into a collision!

No folks, oil will be around for a long time and Recaf oil will only grow more valuable!

Not every region is the same. Where you live seems to be very different from where I live, Montreal. Here, there are charging stations in the parking lots of supermarkets, shopping malls, and theaters, where you can recharge for FREE. Charging stations in street parking cost a couple dollars per charge. Meanwhile, refueling the SUV this weekend cost me $105.  Europe's gas prices are ...more

Interesting, Montreal has a lot of charging stations? I would not have thought so in a cold climate. I am not saying that Teslas and electric cars don't play a role in pollution and energy conservation but I just can't see them replacing conventional cars; ok maybe 25 to 40% at the outside.  I do live in a relatively affluent area and we have concentrations of charging stations ...more

A couple of years ago they already had over 1000 charging stations, 15% of which provide free charging and 97% of which are "level 2" (faster charging). The regions around the city also provide a fair number of stations, so that it is even possible for many to drive to their cottage in an EV, or to do a bit of local tourism. We're still a ways away from replacing the combustion ...more

a large portion of our electricity is generated by oil and gas.  as o&g prices rise, this WILL be reflected in electricity prices. solar doesn't work at night. turbines don't turn when it's calm. to increase hydropower, we must build some new rivers, and mountains for them to flow from. nuclear is political kryptonite. fossil fuels will be with us for a long time. eventually ...more

Like I said, not all regions are the same. Quebec has a surplus of hydro power it's currently trying to sell to Massachussets, if they can get the lines built. No shortages of green energy here. France is doubling down on nuclear power. And with better grid integrations, new battery systems, and higher efficiency turbines and solar cells, wind and solar will continue to make gains around the ...more

Right you are dug there is still plenty of upside and will be for some time.

Grenouille, "oil and gas"? You got the gas part right but not the oil. Oil is only about 1%. Coal is 20% plus. And where I live in the South coal is like 80%. And all the talk of solar, where I live in the Deep Sunny South maybe just a few percent. There is demand for it but the last I heard it takes 6 to 8 months to get solar panels, generators, wiring etc. even at high prices. Now as ...more

Turbines also don't generate when wind speed is too high, it destroys the unit.  Frosty, fog in cold temps sticking to blades, extreme cold also wreak havoc on turbines.  Nuclear is the only viable option for "alternative" energy.
Comment by pacer001 on Mar 15, 2022 11:24pm
Yes, one would think nuclear would be a viable option but it is no longer. Westinghouse used to be a power in the nuclear industry in this country (pun intended!) but they went to heck and a hand basket. That was bad enough but then Toshiba bought them up and made a go at it. It was a worse disaster. I refer to the new nuke plants that were to be built a few years ago in South Carolina. After ...more
