GE healthcare and reconstruction with AI

Was researching on artificial intelligence and cardiac imaging and looked for updates on the GE Edison website. There was some pretty interesting information on the impressive improvements in image quality and in  resolution that were made possible using deep learning image reconstruction techniques.

I didn't see anything on VPT or on echo-but maybe some information is coming?

So far MRI is still the leading method recommended by Cardiologists as outlined on the GE website.

'Great news for patients though that reconstruction with AI is gaining traction.

Hi Graham, Thanks for sharing your dd. If facing open heart surgery, who wouldn't want the best scan even if it meant only 1% more accuracy?  MRIs will always be in cardiologists' toolkit. If I'm going for a regular checkup and a VMS can give me accurate info needed in 5 minutes vs 45-60 minutes in regular echo suite or longer in a MRI, I'll take the VMS.  That's ...more

Hi Leonenoel, Thank you for your thoughts.  I think your points are very well taken, particularly where you have been a patient and can directly speak to the benefits of a more rapid assessment, but also the importance of the accuracy of that exam.   From my reading, it aligns with what you are saying as well, in that MRI still remains the gold standard for high resolution imaging. The ...more

"...but you have to think that GE knows all this since they are featuring a competitive product on the website." Graham, what was the name of the competitive product and have you invested in them or are you possibly waiting on them as well? Just wondering how much faith you have and where it lies?

Hi Pandora, I did post an article a few months ago regarding the competition in cardiac imaging in AI,but the link posted is the GE product that uses MRI with AI to do reconstruction of images. I thought the discussion was aligned with VMS regarding the speed of imaging now possible with MRI and paediatrics in particular  Interesting isn't it?   I dont have a direct ...more

This is an interesting discussion. MRIs will most assuredly be upgraded with AI when/where possible and that is a good thing. The thing about MRIs is they are not only very expensive and have a long waiting list of patients, they also have a very large footprint (about 800 square feet according to google) plus technicians' chamber. Easily more space than several relatively small ultrasound ...more

If you're like me you would probably feel a little more at ease if over these last 15 months of "warp speed" they had developed a decent therapeutic/cure for this dam disease instead of just announcing how sad they are each day as to how many more people have died. Fear mongering!

Good points. To me-I also see VPTs ultrasound to be an adjunct to the MRI, if I understood you correctly.   It does offer portability and cost effectiveness as you note.   To me, and from discussions with radiologists (not cardiologists) MRI is a superior technique for resolution  at a tissue level but CT is preferred depending on what you are examining(bones,lung ...more
