Tehachapi, CA: Winter storm warning: snow in forec

IMHO Maybe it's actually good that Windstar did NOT go online in this weather...

By Tehachapi News Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Kern County mountains, including Tehachapi.According to the warning, a cold winter storm system will affect Southern California from Monday, Dec. 12 through Tuesday morning, Dec. 13. Heavy snowfall will be likely over the Kern County mountains including the Highway 58 and Interstate 5 corridors. At the Tehachapi Pass and on the Grapevine, cold temperatures and periods of heavy snowfall will create hazardous travel conditions through early Tuesday. The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, above 3,500 feet.Snow accumulations of four to eight inches are expected above 5,000 feet with one to four inches along Highway 58 and Interstate 5. Snow levels are expected to be around 5,000 feet on Monday but may lower to 3,000 feet by late Monday night. The heaviest snow is expected to occur Monday afternoon and evening.High winds are not expected with this storm, although occasional gusts to 45 mph are possible.

Sorry, what does weather have anything to do with it going online? The interconnects are already setup, it's a matter of flipping a switch to push the juice into the grid. If anything, the gust of winds up to 45mph is going to drive higher electricity production. This is a godsend imho.

Nope, as far as I know, gusts are never good (not to mention that snow/icing of the blades could cause some serious problems - see, e.g., https://www.lmwindpower.com/upload/why_de-icing_of_wind_turbine_blades.pdf). Test the Windstar electrical system by Dec 10th and to complete the entire commissioning of the first 106 MW's by Dec 31 , 2011 .  This project is still weeks away from completion ! The frustration for me is this slow decline in share price !!

37F is barely below 3 Celsius. It's going to be rain if anything. Also, if you looked at the weather unfold today, it's been good, just rain. The worst is over.

Firefighter88, you forgot the sentence after the Dec 31, 2011 date:"Based on this last rescheduling of the interconnection outage, Western Wind Energy and Windstar contractors RMT (EPC) and Gamesa (WTG) are required to energize and test the Windstar electrical system by December 10th and to complete the entire commissioning of the first 106 MWs by December 31, 2011.  Revenue service ...more

Around 0 Celsius and rain create perfect conditions for icing of the blades (that's how ice storms happen - never when it's -5C or below). In any case, all this is just a speculation on my part... maybe the weather has nothing to do with this at all.. maybe the management just forgot to release the news :).. or maybe they are holding off because "Western Wind has several other ...more

Hi Noob, thanks for laying it out, I do agree at this point we are just speculating on delays of any material news release. In any case, it does feel like someone is attemping to prop this up whenever it dips beyond so-called 'reason'.
