These government guys really need to get there act together

MAYO, YUKON - Yukon’s mining minister says elevated levels of cyanide have been detected in a waterway after an equipment failure and slide of ore at Victoria Gold’s Eagle Mine last week.

The announcement by John Streicker comes hours after the company issued a statement saying it had detected no cyanide in surface water after the slide.

If this is in fact the case, heads need to roll as allowing a week of cyanide leaching into watersheds without notifying those down stream is unacceptable.  These alerts should have come by phone directlty by the Burnaby and a warning issued immediately.

What a ministerial cluster fux this is turning out to be, and not from VG

If they had these results last night how can you make the current release today? What am I missing here?  Streicker has told a briefing that elevated cyanide levels of about 40 parts per billion were collected in a creek, a level higher than the allowable five parts per billion, and which “could potentially affect fish.” He says the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun was immediately ...more

Whho verified the cyaidine? Where is the technical report... is it bar talk or pr spin? The kiddies in Grazzy Narrows Ontario has a merc spill for decades and the Billy-da-Davis boyz suggested it was natural occurrrring.  Where the tecknical report? Who prepared it...? Was it written on a napkin at a bar and suddenly gone missing? When the iii.to dam broke.. what was the settlement?

Those samples were taken immediately after the slide, I wonder what samples going forward are going test.  Not looking good.

Zibo.... You were 100% correct about what they would say. When I saw the conference it was almost exactly what you said was going to happen. Just wanted to give you your props. Just my opinion.

Thanks crazytimes, I have no professional expertise concerning this tragedy, just using common sense. After viewing the photos of the slide, and seeing how that large section of the HLF sheared off and rotated, I can't see how the liner could have survived intact with all the stress it must have been subject to.  Unfortunately I think there is a high % probability that the liner has ...more

It's a not-a environmental disaster-ero until the CBC tells the plebes that it is so. Has CBC reported it... are funds flowing from Pubic Safety yet?
Comment by rkhosla on Jul 04, 2024 2:57pm
I don't get what you are suprised/upset about (besides the company perhaps being overly reassuring). There is a huge amount of crushed ore with a huge anount of CN leachate sitting outside containment.  There is an additional huge anount sitting up on a comprimised pad.  At operation, moisture content is 14% (ie of the CN solution) and dry is about 7% i think they said.  So that ...more

RK...What you are saying is not what MDY is making a point about.. MDJ is 100% correct! Please reference the company news release after the halt and then compare it to what he just found.  Just my opinion.
Comment by rkhosla on Jul 04, 2024 3:06pm
Ok fair - but they are not saying these are critically elevated levels or anything like that.  They are just saying they are elevated from baseline.  I think anger should be directed at the company (for seemingly insisting CN has not left the site) and not at the gov, which is doing its best here.  So i think the anger is misguided....
Comment by crazytimes on Jul 04, 2024 3:11pm
rk... totally. That's what I am so confused about. If the FN got these results last night, how can you they make that claim today after a halt no less? Wt f am i missing? Just my opinion.
Comment by rkhosla on Jul 04, 2024 3:18pm
It is exactly like they tried to explain at the press conference. This is a very complicated issue and a complicated plume of groundwater. It requires sampling in many locations - including the establishment of monitoring wells - and at many snapshots in time. It moves. Spreads out like a fan. I guess I'm saying a few things. First, it is no surprise whatsoever that they have found elevated ...more

rk.. the halt is for investors to get the release. lol. I would expect many bought based on that news. Only reason I didn't was because I got hung up on the default notice. Totally.  Anger though should be focussed at the company.  The gov clearly is not (and ought not be) focussed on the investors....
Comment by rkhosla on Jul 04, 2024 3:39pm
(And i am 100pc positive the company knew in advance what the gov tests showed)

I am surprised that the SP hasn't tanked on this news. Tomorrow's trading will be interesting, when US markets are open again.
Comment by rkhosla on Jul 04, 2024 3:45pm
This is the part I'm not understanding. What part of this news is in any way a surprise?  I'm being utterly sincere in my question. I don't think there's a surprise here at all.

Zibo... what amazes me is no one is even talking about the 50 - 60 meter tall sheer that needs to come down? How many tons of material is in that? Just my opinion.
Comment by SidelineSam on Jul 04, 2024 3:50pm
Holy CT... 50-60mt of tall sheer....  No tryck question, just a  clear answer to: Is there  cyanide in the pad or not?  __ yes __ no

he said the rain might bring it down. Then he talked about his university professor.
Comment by Zibo510 on Jul 04, 2024 4:19pm
Yes crazy, that's like a cliff,  it also a death trap that could come down at any time, not a chance authorities will allow anyone near it. This may sound like a wacky idea, but when authorities want to start a snow avalanche, they fire explosives from a cannon at the location they want to slide, other than that maybe they could use high pressure water cannons to undermine and saturate ...more

Not crazy at all - it might be a heli drop avalanche bomb - this is common practice (for avy control in the winter.

Maybe they could get the air force to bomb it he,he
Comment by crazytimes on Jul 04, 2024 4:34pm
zib... that makes sense. I am just guessing but would think the main issue is finding a way to control the material flow that will result from the collapse before it does one way or the other. It's not like you can work underneath it, or on top of it? I have to figure this is a main focus right now. Otherwise the resulting slide could push further which you don't want for obvious ...more

"In the 2mil tons outside of containment he said he estimates 300,000 m³ of cyanide." Which equates to the equivalent of about 60,000 gallons of cyanide (~ 200 gallons per m3).  A significant amount but not the 27 million gallons someone reported the day of the slide. Can 60,000 gallons of cyanide be effectively managed? Probably if the right things are done at the right ...more
