What a Difference a Year Makes!

On September 8, 2009 Randgold signed a letter of intent to sell Kiaka to Volta Resources.   Both Volta and I have come a long way since then.  Volta's share price was 17 cents on September 8, 2009.   I had blown up my account in a devastating trade in April and May, 2009 on a bet that the U.S. banks would either fail the stress tests or the investing public would judge the stress tests to be a farce.  I used a three times leveraged ETF on the bet and froze like a deer in headlights when the trade went against me.  Throughout the summer of 2009 I made matters worse through excessive trading in a despaate attempt to make my money back, making 7 or 8 trades a day, enlisting my secretary to make trades for me when I was off at court.  By the time the summer was over I had lost over 2 thirds of my account.  Prior to the stress tests I had for four years succeeded in an annual gain of 80 to 100 percent.  There were at least ten things that I did wrong when I lost my money and the wierd thing is that most of the time I knew that what I was doing was wrong.

After I had the stuffing knocked out of me I took a week away from the market and did some soul searching.  I determined that not only was I going to make my money back but I was going to enjoy myself while I did it.  I have had many many great trades and successes over the past five or six years since I began trading.  I never felt like I was a great trader/investor until that day when my account had been mostly wiped out but I rid myself of all the negativity in my head and set out to make a comeback.   As a result of my investment in VTR I brought myself back to where I was before my stupid trade and then some.  I am grateful to the following people:

1.     Charles Oliver who brought Birim to my attention in 2008 and inpired me to invest about $1,000.00 dollars on the premise that West Africa had great potential and if anyone could make a big find it would be these guys;

2.    Mark Bristow for having the genius to pass Kiaka off to Volta;

3.    Kevin Bullock for his excellent stewardship of the project;

4.    Jesse Livermore for setting out his life story so that I could realize that even the very best traders can make devastating mistakes;

5.     And lastly everyone I have met here on this board who have helped me make this past year a truly enjoyable experience with all its ups and downs.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one.I have a similar story. Not exact the same as yours but I was way too aggresive and got caught too. There may be many on this board just like you and me.I have continued my aggresive trading in order to try to make back what I lost.So far I have made back about 1/2 of it and if Volta and my other stocks do well this fall I will be back in ...more

 That's a wonderful story..it is nice to hear you have bounced back. The market is a strange place and sometimes emotions get caught up in your trading activity. ( more often than not .)  Usually  the best stocks to own, are the ones staring you right in the face. ALLEN 4 you are a class act, your posts have been a pleasure to read, and  have always brought a smile to ...more
