Hydro-Quebec and Energir thinking out of the box

Very interesting article highlighting a world premiere, where both entities collaborate to drastically contribute to reduce Quebec's GHG emissions. The article is in French but worth, those interested, google translating, for a bedside weekend read. https://www.lapresse.ca/affaires/chroniques/2021-07-16/pourquoi-energir-accepte-de-perdre-de-l-argent.php

Worth a good read. Not only will the agreement save Quebecers $ 1.5 billion, but it will also reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) by 540,000 tonnes per year by 2030, the equivalent of the emission of 150,000 cars. In addition, it requires the natural gas distributor nergir to accept a significant drop in its business volume, which is unnatural. Wow! What is it about ? A tripartite ...more

How can this link in with XBC? Well, Energir may have a further incentive to add RNG and hydrogen to the offered energy mix, further substantiating price increases (even if modest) alongside receiving government grants and carbon credits. At the end of the day, they may end up generating as much income as they do today, while XBC would benefit from a large stable customer and/or benefit from the ...more

There's also Quebec Nationalism at play here. With XBC being a Quebec based company, that gives them a strong advantage.

Hey Ciao. You're absolutely right about Quebec Nationalism. Remember my riddle in February 2020 when Hydro Quebec invested $660 million in Innergex? The the answer to the riddle was my as yet undisclosed prediction of who was very likely to partner with Xebec at some point in the future. Nobody got it. I posted it like this: " In the morning, all the police cars disperse from ...more

Nationalism is so strong that Quebec politicians wanted to block the sale of RONA to Loews in 2012 even "declaring" RONA a national treasure.  I wonder what they will be calling XEBEC in a few years.  They won't squawk if HQ takes an equity interest in XEBEC but foreign entities will be frowned upon.

Why do you think it's called Xebec?
Comment by tamaracktop on Jul 18, 2021 1:24pm
Xebec isn't named after "a 3-masted Mediterranean sailing ship with long overhanging bow and stern", as Webster's defines it. Xebec is an excellent word to use in Scrabble if you have 2 E's, a C, an X, and a B.
