(The Canadian Press) TORONTO-NEW YORK - The Toronto stock market closed sharply lower Tuesday as investors took profits following a sharp run of gains while gold moved further into record territory.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 135.85 points at 12,916.63 led by losses in financial, telecom and base metal stocks.

The key index has jumped about three per cent over the last six sessions to its highest level since early September 2008 — just before the financial crisis worsened with the collapse of Lehman Bros.

The TSX Venture Exchange was down 36.81 points at 2,005.03.

New York markets were also lower with the Dow Jones industrial average 60.09 points lower at 11,346.75.

The Nasdaq composite index slid 17.07 points to 2,562.98 while the S&P 500 index was down 9.85 points at 1,213.4.

After-Hours News

Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA, Stock Forum) announced its preliminary unaudited financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2010. Revenues for the third quarter of 2010 were $31.2 million, compared to $45.5 million in the year earlier period. The company posted a net loss of $34.9 million or 38 cents a share in the quarter, down from $4.6 million or 66 cents in the year ago period.

Drift Lake Resources Inc. (TSX: V.DLA, Stock Forum) and Northbrook Energy, LLC have entered into a non-binding letter of intent dated as of November 4, 2010 providing for a business combination of the two companies. Northbrook is a private company engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of oil and gas properties in Texas. It is also seeking to acquire additional exploration opportunities in Latin America. Drift Lake is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of mineral resource properties in Canada.
