PARIS, Sept. 11 (UPI) - Eight managers of a meat processing company linked to a scandal in which horse meat was allegedly sold as beef have been arrested, French police say.

The managers were being questioned as part of an investigation into whether the company, Spanghero, violated public health and environmental regulations, Radio France International reported Tuesday.

French authorities claim the company knowingly sold nearly 1.7 million pounds of horse meat mislabeled as beef over a period of six months earlier this year.

The company's sanitary license was revoked and the company closed in June. It has since reopened under the name La Lauragaise with new management and financial backers.
