They haven’t been hot performers over the full course of the year, but the Horizons roster of short-term futures ETFs made a run back into the green this morning, with the HORIZONS BETAPRO S&P 500 VIX SHORT-TERM FUTURES BULL PLUS ETF (TSX:T.HVU, Stock Forum) leading the market with a 9.92% increase, up $0.39 to $4.32.

The underperforming fund, which is down 83.67% on the year and topped out at a 52-week high of $36.92, is at the end of a long trail downwards but is showing signs of value with a recent slow rise up from a low of $3.17 mid-September.

The HORIZONS BETAPRO NYMEX NATURAL GAS BULL PLUS ETF (TSX:T.HNU, Stock Forum) has been on more of a rollercoaster ride for the past 12 months, but shows similar value potential moving up from a mid-August low of $8.41, to today’s $10.51, up 6.59% and the second fastest gainer on the exchange. T.HNU runs double the volatility of the NYMEX Natural Gas futures contract for the next delivery month.

The HORIZONS BETAPRO COMEX SILVER BULL PLUS ETF (TSX:T.HZU, Stock Forum) jumped 5.09% on the day, running at twice the average daily volume and climbing to $9.29, up $0.45 on the day. The fund corresponds to twice the daily performance of the COMEX silver futures contract for a subsequent delivery month and is running a 138% return over the last six months.

The IPATH S&P 500 VIX SHORT-TERM FUTURES ETN (TSX:T.VXX, Stock Forum), which “links to a daily rolling long position in the first and second month VIX futures contracts and reflects the implied volatility of the S&P 500 Index at various points along the volatility forward curve”, climbed 5.16%, up $0.80 to $16.30 on average volume. Down 53.79% on the year to date, like the T.HVU fund, it appears to have bottomed and started a slow roll upwards.

The HORIZONS BETAPRO S&P 500 VIX SHORT-TERM FUTURES ETF (TSX:T.HUV, Stock Forum) rounds out the top 5, climbing 5.2% to $8.70, up $0.43.

On the down side, the Horizons BetaPro NYMEX Natural Gas Bear Plus ETF (TSX:T.HND, Stock Forum), T.HNU's inverse fund, took a 6.75% drop, while the Horizons BetaPro COMEX Silver Bear Plus ETF (TSX:T.HZD, Stock Forum), the T.HZU inverse, fell 5.77%.
