Canada’s main stock index lost as much as 300 points at one point in Monday trading, as commodity prices plunged.
Continuing the September sell-off, US markets fell sharply as fears about the worsening coronavirus as well as uncertainty on further fiscal stimulus rattled traders, with the Dow plunging 800 points at one point in the trading day.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq had led the broader market off its coronavirus lows and into record territory, has been hit hard so far in September — continues to struggle. Apple, Microsoft and Amazon were all off by at least 1%, though the former two in that list managed to regain that lost ground.
Japanese markets were closed for the Respect for the Aged Day.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.15 cents US compared with 75.84 cents US on Friday.
Crude oil prices were down $1.61 to $39.50.
The price of gold was down $38.47 to $1,911.54.
In world markets, the Nikkei remained at 23,360.30, the Hang Seng was down 494.30 points to 23,950.69, the FTSE was down 195.92 points to 5,804.29, and the DAX was down 548.71 points to 12,542.44.
