Canada’s main stock index closed lower on Wednesday, essentially giving up the gains made in the previous session, despite further solid performance among the energy and financial sectors, which have been trending higher all week. The TSX came out of the gates hot in early trading but was weighed down by losses among the healthcare, telecom, and utility sectors.

Market indexes returned to positive territory in early trading, after its rally took a pause in the previous session, but it was only a brief comeback and Wall Street fell lower to close in the red once again. Boeing stock took an early jump after it was cleared by the FAA to allow the 737 Max to fly again, but it followed the market’s trend and also fell. The fleet had been grounded for nearly two years after two of the jets crashed and killed 346 people in total. Target closed higher after the retailer beat estimates on quarterly earnings and revenue, while Lowe’s quarterly earnings came up short. Pfizer and BioNTech stated that a final data analysis found their Coronavirus vaccine was 95% effective and appeared to fend off severe COVID-19.

The Canadian dollar traded for 76.53 cents US compared with 76.37 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were up $0.25 to $41.68.
The price of gold was down $11.63 to $1,870.44.
​​​​​​​In world markets, the Nikkei was down 283.33 points to 25,728.14, the Hang Seng was up 129.83 points to 26,544.29, the FTSE was up 19.97 points to 6,385.24, and the DAX was up 68.78 points to 13,201.89.
