Thanks to a jump in the energy sector as the price of oil climbs, along with tech and mining gains, Canada’s main stock index rose higher on Thursday, despite losses among the industrials and telecom sectors.

US stock futures endured a mixed to lower close, with investors watching Thursday’s FDA meeting on Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine and continued talks in Washington around reaching Coronavirus stimulus and government funding deals. The Labor Department reported a much larger than expected 853,000 new filings for unemployment benefits for the week ended Dec. 5, compared with the upwardly revised 716,000 the prior week, which was the lowest total during the pandemic. The FDA’s COVID-19 vaccine advisory panel is set to meet to discuss the implications around emergency use authorization of vaccine developed by American drug giant Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech.

Crude oil prices were up $1.39 to $46.91.
The price of gold was up 0.16 to $1,836.19.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 61.56 points to 26,756.24, the Hang Seng was down 91.93 points to 26,410.59, the FTSE was up 35.66 points to 6,599.76, and the DAX was up 44.38 points to 13,295.73.
