Canada’s main stock index climbed higher in Thursday trading taking a big rebound from equally big losses in the previous session. Financials, healthcare, and industrials were higher, along with utilities, as well as metals and mining, but the energy, tech, and telecom sectors all closed lower.

Investors assessed the latest weekly jobless claims data and a fourth-quarter gross domestic product reading. It was a good day for Apple, turned in its largest revenue on record at $111.4 billion in its fiscal first-quarter earnings report for fiscal 2021. Sales for every product category rose by double-digit percentage points. However, Tesla dropped about 5% after the electric car maker posted worse-than-expected earnings for the latest quarter. The company also said it expects annual average delivery growth of 50% going forward. Video game retailer GameStop has been a target on of Reddit’s “wallstreetbets” pushed its January gains to a whopping 1,744%. GameStop was higher again on Thursday, reversing earlier losses and soaring another 40% as the mania continues.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.04 cents US compared with 78.28 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were down $0.55 to $52.30.
The price of gold was up 1.03 to $1,841.20.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 431.10 points to 28,197.42, the Hang Seng was down 727.73 points to 28,550.77, the FTSE was down 40.96 points to 6,526.15, but the DAX was up 45.62 points to 13,665.93.
