Canada's main stock index closed higher in Monday trading, helped by gains in the telecommunications sector as well as the tech and health care sectors.

US stocks saw a split performance, as investors continue to sit on the fence ahead of substantial inflation data to come later this week, while heavyweight technology shares mostly deflected a deal by the richest nations from across the globe on a worldwide minimum corporate tax.

Crude oil prices were down $0.40 to $69.22.
The price of gold was up 9.70 to $1,899.34.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 77.72 points to 29,019.24, the Hang Seng was down 130.82 points to 28,787.28, the FTSE was up 8.18 points to 7,077.22, and the DAX was down 15.75 points to 15,677.15.
