Canada’s main stock index nudged lower in Wednesday trading despite gains in the energy sector as the price of oil rose to nearly $74 (USD) a barrel.

Wall Street saw a mixed close, despite reassurances from US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that the Fed is not rushing to hike interest rates, while European stocks remained under pressure. The NASDAQ rose to a new all-time high thanks to a boost from Tesla shares, with investors cheering data that showed a record peak for US factory activity in June.

The price of gold was down 2.79 to $1,774.77.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 9.24 points to 28,874.89, the Hang Seng was up 507.31 points to 28,817.07, the FTSE was down 15.95 points to 7,074.06, and the DAX was down 179.94 points to 15,456.39.
