Canada’s main stock index closed in the green Friday, but was still hampered by weakness in material stocks and downbeat sentiment on Wall Street. The material sector, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies led declines slipping approximately a percentage point on weaker copper prices.
The Crude Oil WTI climbed about 2% as oil prices rose and were on pace for a fourth weekly gain, boosted by supply constraints and a weaker dollar.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.58 cents U.S. today, compared with U.S. on 80.01 cents Thursday.
Crude oil prices were up 1.83 to $83.95.
The price of gold was down 3.60 to $1,817.80.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 364.85 points to 28,124.28, the Hang Seng was down 46.45 points to 24,383.32, the FTSE was down 20.90 points to 7,542.95, and the DAX was down 148.35 points to 15,883.24.

Word on Wall Street
The DJIA was down marginally Friday. A weak U.S. retail sales report for December didn't help matters, as consumer spending surprisingly fell during that key holiday shopping month, raising concerns that runaway inflation is beginning to take a toll on the U.S. economy.
