After a series of rough sessions, a broad gain pushed Canada’s main stock index higher on Thursday, with the financial sector leading the pack. A rally in cannabis stocks also provided some solid upward momentum.

On Wall Street, impressive earnings from the likes of Meta (NASDAQ:META) provided more good news for a solid week in the tech sector. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) will share their quarterly results after the closing bell.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.55 cents US, compared to 73.28 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded $0.54 higher at $74.84 a barrel, and the Brent contract added $0.62 to $78.31 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US$4.06 to US$ 1,987.60.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 41.21 points to 28,457.68, the Hang Seng was up 83.01 points to 19,840.28, the FTSE was down 21.06 points to 7,831.58, and the DAX was up 4.72 points to 15,800.45.
