TORONTO (SHfn) - Precious metals assays were special for some speculators Wednesday, while a medical tech stock popped on a China contract.

Andean Resources (TSX: T.AND, Stock Forum) shares surged 34% to 95 cents on Wednesday after the miner reported results from the ongoing 2008/09 drill program at its 100% owned Cerro Negro project in Argentina, which included 32 meters of 34.6 grams per tonne (g/t) gold and 214 g/t silver.

As well, shares of UTS Energy (TSX: T.UTS, Stock Forum) skyrocketed 108% to $1.73 as French energy company Total announced late Tuesday that its subsidiary Total E&P Canada Ltd is launching a $617 million bid for the Calgary-based company. The deal, worth $1.30 per share, is a cash offer.

Imaging Dynamics Company (TSX: T.IDL, Stock Forum) shares shot up 40% to 21 cents after the provider of digital radiography said it has been awarded a contract to supply 300 units of its CCD-based DR imaging technology to the China Charity Federation during the next 12 to 18 months.

MedMira (TSX: V.MIR, Stock Forum), meanwhile, announced its plans to move forward with an outsourced manufacturing strategy. MedMira stock popped 40% to seven cents.

Shares of Sonomax Hearing Healthcare (TSX: V.SHH, Stock Forum) powered 33% higher to four cents after the manufacturer of intra-ear technologies said it has sold the rights and associated assets for its proof-of-performance software system, for use in testing hearing protection devices, for the sum of US$2 million to 3M.

And, Nuvo Research (TSX: T.NRI, Stock Forum) Wednesday reported that it has successfully completed all of the studies that will support the company's resubmission of its Pennsaid application to the United States Food and Drug Administration. Pennsaid, a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is currently marketed in Canada and several European countries to treat the pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. Its shares jumped 12% to 14.5 cents.
