Top Bullboards post:

“Downstream simplistically is split into refinery (where all the distillation of crude takes place) and marketing (retail stations or bulk sale to industrial customers). From what I gather, it appears that Total Kenya is a pure marketing (i.e. runs the retail stations) division and gets the oil products from Kenya Petroleum Refinery (JV between Govt and Essar). It seems that Total Kenya will buy the crude and prob pays a tolling fee to KPR to refine the product. The new direction seems to KPR will directly source the crude and sells the refined products to Total Kenya hence capturing any efficiencies etc. Apparently, KPR supplies about 55000bbl/day for its domestic use and prob exports the rest (to the other nine African countries). Total Kenya in this case is a distributor under the above description…” From Oily10 on the Africa Oil (TSX: V.AOI, Stock Forum) board.
