“The market has put in a technical bottom,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, in an interview with MarketWatch. “We will probably see a slightly better tone to the market this week, but the bias will remain defensive.”

TORONTO-NEW YORK (The Canadian Press) - - The Toronto stock market closed modestly higher Tuesday as Scotiabank (TSX: T.BNS) delivered quarterly earnings that beat expectations and mining stocks continued to recover from sharp losses racked up earlier this month.

The S&P/TSX composite index came down from a 121-point runup to rise 43.15 points to 11,609.3 while the TSX Venture Exchange dropped 15.67 points to 1,309.34.

The Dow Jones industrial average ran ahead 125.86 points to 12,580.69. The Nasdaq composite index gained 33.46 points to 2,870.99 while the S&P 500 index was ahead 14.6 points at 1,332.42.

After-Hours News

Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM, Stock Forum)
After Thursday’s close, the payment-services company said it expects fiscal third-quarter adjusted earnings of 68 cents to 70 cents a share on adjusted revenue of $495 million to $500 million. Analysts expected earnings of 70 cents a share on $502 million in revenue.

Rainy River Resources (TSX: T.RR, Stock Forum)
The gold junior, after Tuesday's closing bell, reported assay results from the Rainy River Gold Project in northwest Ontario, which included 4.5 g/t gold over 55.5 metres.
