Today in the markets

U.S. stocks closed marginally lower Wednesday as investors mulled a mixed batch of economic data and continuing hopes that central banks will take more stimulus action.

Canadian stocks closed on the upside as the loonie reached its highest level since early May. Investors also took note of a rising oil price and news that U.S. industrial production climbed 0.6% in July, on top of a 0.4% gain in June.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 51.83 to 11,905,44, while the TSX Venture Exchange gained 9.61 to 1,206.62.

Active stocks include First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX: T.FM, Stock Forum), which rose 0.42% to $19.11. Labrador Iron Mines Holdings Ltd. (TSX: T.LIM, Stock Forum) fell 8% to $1.85 after reporting a loss in the latest quarter. Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX: T.ABX, Stock Forum) rose 1.1% to $34.26.
