TSX falls in mid-morning trading

The TSX composite was lower, falling 38.29 points to 11,971.61 in mid-morning trading on Wednesday. The Dow rose 7.14 to 13,110.13, while NASDAQ gained 1.42 to 3,078.56.

Canada's benchmark stock index opened lower on Wednesday, even as heavyweight banks reporting earnings this week again boosted the overall market. Canada's biggest bank, Royal Bank of Canada (TSX: T.RY), was up 11 cents to $54.28, while rival Bank of Montreal (TSX: T.BMO) gained 38 cents to $58.31.

The price of gold chopped down US$8.32 to US$1,658.53 an ounce, while silver fell US$0.112 to U$30.78 an ounce.
