Stocks down in mid-morning trading

Toronto stocks were down slightly Monday as miners gave up oversized gains from late last week, while banks and energy companies lent support.

The S&P/TSX composite fell 5.33 points to 12,262.68, while the TSX Venture Exchange climbed 0.78 points 1,277.49.

The volume leader in Toronto was Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX: T.TLM, Stock Forum), which rose 2.88% to $14.27 Canada’s number five independent oil explorer said chief executive John Manzoni has stepped down, effective immediately.

The Dow gave up 3.60 points to 13,303.04, while the Nasdaq composite index was down 16.66 points to 3,119.76. The U.S. government is gearing up to sell $18 billion worth of American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG, Stock Forum) shares.

The price of gold fell US$4.51 to US$1,731.54 on ounce, while silver prices eased 0.019 to $US$33.68 an ounce. Oil slipped $0.37 to US$96.05 an ounce.
