The TSX composite was higher, rising 57.33 points to 12,416.80 in mid-morning trading on Thursday. The Dow rose 68.15 to 13,562.76, while NASDAQ gained 2.69 to 3,137.92.

Markets in Toronto jumped at the open after the European Central Bank left interest rates unchanged at its policy meeting and as upbeat U.S. economic data in the previous session helped keep fears of global slowdown at bay.

In other news, Husky Energy Inc. (TSXD: T.HSE, Stock Forum) reached agreement with the United Steelworkers union, after a four-month strike, for members to return to work at the 155,000 barrel-per-day Lima, Ohio, refinery starting Oct. 8, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.

The price of gold rose US$12.30 to US$1,790.30 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.279 to U$34.88 an ounce.
