The TSX composite was marginally higher, rising 52.88 points to 12,265.30 in mid-morning trading on Thursday. The Dow was up 23.70 to 13,368.67, while NASDAQ eased 6.67 to 3,058.45.

Among stocks to watch, a senior official for Enbridge Inc. (TSX: T.ENB, Stock Forum) said the company needs to do a better job of communicating to most British Columbians and other Canadians the merits of its contentious Northern Gateway oil pipeline planned for the westernmost province.

The price of gold climbed US$6.12 to US$1,768.28 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.076 to U$34.06 an ounce.
