Petaquilla Minerals falls on takeover threat: Canadian market movers

On Thursday the top TSX mover was Petaquilla Minerals Ltd. (TSX: T.PTQ, Stock Forum). It fell 4.7% and was trading at $0.61 on volume of 5.7 million shares. The gold exploration company’s board of directors recommended that Petaquilla shareholders reject the takeover offer by Inmet Mining Corp. (TSX: T.IMN, Stock Forum) after B.C. securities regulators rejected a shareholder rights plan on Wednesday that would have helped Petaquilla fight the $140 million bid.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX: T.SU, Stock Forum) was the second most active stock on the TSX. The stock was up 3.37% and trading at $1.13 on volume of 4.9 million. On Oct. 31, the Athabasca oil sands company reported a record average oil sands segment production of 378,900 barrels of oil per day.

Pacific Coal Resources Ltd. (TSX: V.PAK, Stock Forum) was the volume leader on the TSX Venture Exchange. It was unchanged and was trading at $0.135 on volume of 11.7 million. On Oct. 30 the coal mining company said Blue Pacific Investments Group, Ltd., a principle shareholder, purchased 19,750,000 common shares and 20,374,998 common share purchase warrants.
