Stocks fall in mid-morning trading

The TSX composite fell 49.21 points to 12,120.53 in mid-morning trading on Tuesday. The Dow was down 2.72 to 12,962.88, while NASDAQ lost 16.52 to 2,985.58.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.22 of a cent to 100.72 cents U.S., following the announcement by the Bank of Canada to leave its trendsetting rate at 1%, with an eye to keeping it there for the balance of the year. It's the 18th straight meeting at which the rate was kept where it was.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX: T.CNQ, Stock Forum) said it expects to produce more crude oil and natural gas liquids next year, and plans to raise its capital budget by nearly 10%. Its shares were down 1.67% to $27.72.

The price of gold plummeted US$20.21 to US$1,695.71 an ounce, while silver slipped US$0.75 to U$32.90 an ounce.
