The TSX composite was higher, rising 62.00 points to 12,736.73 in mid-morning trading on Friday. The Dow was down 6.53 to 13,589.49, while NASDAQ fell 12.99 to 3,123.01.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall joined 10 U.S. state governors in urging U.S. President Barack Obama to approveTransCanada Corp's (TSX: T.TRP, Stock Forum) contentious and long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline, citing energy-security benefits in both countries.

The price of gold rose US$0.70 to US$1,688.43 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.05 to U$31.80 an ounce.
