Mid-morning report: Stocks mixed as commodities fall

The TSX composite fell marginally, losing 9.10 points to 12,779.92 in mid-morning trading on Wednesday. The Dow was down 53.12 to 13,965.58, while NASDAQ gained 5.94 to 3,192.44.

According to published reports, in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address he said he would help middle income Americans and make the country more competitive.

Obama also announced a plan to seek a new trade agreement with the European Union, known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

On the TSX, Thomson Reuters Corp. (TSX: T.TRI, Stock Forum) posted $497 million U.S. of adjusted earnings, or 60 cents per share in the latest quarter, compared with $445 million U.S. or 54 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2011. It fell 3.06% to $29.78 in mid morning trading.

The price of gold fell US$4.27 to US$1,646.99 an ounce, while silver slipped US$0.16 to US$30.95 an ounce and oil lost US$0.13 to US$97.38.
