Mid-morning report: stocks up

The TSX composite was higher, rising 116.19 points to 12,460.75 in mid-morning trading on Tuesday. The Dow was up 13.17 to 14,636.65, while NASDAQ gained 0.14 to 3,222.39.

The first BlackBerry (TSX: T.BB, Stock Forum) 10 device with the company’s renowned physical keyboard, will be available for Canadians to purchase at the end of the month. The stock rose 1% to $15.07 in mid-morning trading.

The six largest U.S. banks announced plans in the first three months of this year to eliminate about 21,000 positions, or 1.8% of their combined workforce to keep profits climbing.

The price of gold rose US$13.46 to US$1,587.05 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.67 to U$27.98 an ounce.
