CALGARY - One of Canada's energy giants has joined a program that makes military veterans a priority when hiring new employees.
Federal Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino was in Calgary for the announcement by Cenovus Energy (TSX:T.CVE, Stock Forum), which has a workforce of about 5,000.
Fantino said Cenovus is the first energy and utility company to participate in the program announced last fall as part of a government veterans transition plan.
He said many Canadian soldiers leaving the military have useful skills, including the ability to work as part of a team.
Cenovus senior vice-president Jacqui McGillivray said the company has been hiring veterans for years.
She said when applicants are equally qualified the nod will go to the military veteran.
