Canadian Press is reporting a TransCanada (TSX:T.TRP, Stock Forum) oil pipeline has ruptured in remote Alberta, 140 kilometres west of Fort McMurray.

A National Energy Board spokeswoman confirmed the Nova gas transmission line, which carries sweet gas, has been shut down and poses no threat to public safety.

Sweet gas is low in hydrogen sulfide.

The rupture has led to reports that Suncor Energy (TSX:T.SU, Stock Forum) has slowed oil sands operations in Fort McMurray, while Syncrude Canada has also suspended shipments.

According to the Financial Post, Shell (NYSE:RDS.B, Stock Forum), Cenovus (TSX:T.CVE, Stock Forum) and Imperial Oil (TSX:T.IMO, Stock Forum) are unaffected by the spill.

Oilsands operators need sweet gas to produce bitumen and convert it to synthetic crude.
