Wi-LAN (T.WIN) falls 23% on court results: Canadian market movers

Here are the most active stocks on Friday mid-morning on the TSX and TSX Venture Exchange.

On Thursday, the top TSX mover was Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX: T.WIN, Stock Forum). It lost 22.8% and was trading at $3.15 on volume of 7.1 million shares.

On October 23, the intellectual property licensing company lost in court against Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL, Stock Forum) in a patent-infringement battle. The patent that was at issue in that case expires in just over three months and is only one patent in the company’s portfolio of more than 3,000.

Osisko Mining Corp. (TSX: T.OSK, Stock Forum) was the second most active stock on the TSX. The stock was up 1.7% and trading at $5.35 on volume of 5.7 million.

The mining company had no related news to explain the high volume in trading.

Petrodorado Energy Ltd. (TSX: V.PDQ, Stock Forum) was the volume leader on the TSX Venture Exchange. It rose 22.2% and was trading at $0.055 on volume of 3.3 million.

On October 22, the oil and natural gas explorer reported Krishna Vathyam, President and CEO had resigned from the company. Vathyam also relinquished his position as a Director of Petrodorado and its subsidiaries. Gregg Vernon, a Director since inception, will assume the position of Interim President and CEO.

In other news, also on October 22, Sintana Energy Inc. (TSX: V.SNN, Stock Forum) said that it had commenced arbitration action, through the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, France, against Petrodorado and Petrosouth Energy Corp., the operator, relating to the Talora Block located in the Magdalena Basin, Colombia. Sintana and Petrodorado entered into a farm-out agreement dated Oct. 16, 2011 to further the exploration and development of the Talora Block. Sintana contends that Petrodorado committed multiple breaches of the agreement.

The second most active stock on the TSX Venture was Unigold Inc. (TSX: V.UGD, Stock Forum) It gained 30.8% and was trading at $0.085 after 3.1 million shares changed hands.

Today, Unigold reported results from recent drilling at its Candelones "Extension Zone" target within the company's, 22,600 hectare Neita Concession in the Dominican Republic. Highlights of the results included 423.6 metres averaging 1.07 grams per tonne gold, 1.2 grams per tonne silver, 0.1% copper and 0.2% zinc including 38.0 metres averaging 5.13 grams per tonne gold, 4.5 grams per tonne silver, 0.5% copper.
