Fission Uranium Corp. (TSX: V.FCU, Stock Forum) President Ross McElroy has been named Canada’s prospector of the year for his role in a Saskatchewan uranium find that has caught the attention of investors.

Speaking to Stockhouse from Singapore, McElroy said he is “thrilled” to learn that he and the Fission team have been recognized in this way.

The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada confirmed Thursday that McElroy is the recipient of the Bill Dennis Award for prospecting success.

In statement, the PDAC said he won the award for leading Fission’s team of geologists to one of the most significant discoveries in the Athabasca Basin in recent years.

The Patterson Lake South (PLS) discovery has rejuvenated the entire exploration industry in the Athabasca Basin, PDAC said in a press release, adding that PLS is a high-grade, shallow-depth uranium discovery located on the southwestern margin of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan.

“This is a huge honour,’’ said McElroy. “It’s the biggest award that you can get in our industry,’’ he said.
A 30-year veteran of the prospecting business, McElroy will be recognized at PDAC’s annual convention in Toronto, March 4, along with a handful of other award winners.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX: T.ABX, Stock Forum) picks up this year’s Thayer Lindsley Award for international mineral discoveries. The award is recognition for the 14.1 million ounce Goldrush deposit in Nevada’s Cortez mining district, which marks the largest Carlin style discovery in that state in the past decade.

Roger Wall is this year’s winner of the Distinguished Service Award, for his service to PDAC during the past 47 years.
Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX: TCK.B, Stock Forum). wins the Environmental and Social Responsibility Award.
