BRAMPTON, Ont. _ The company that owns Loblaw grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies says it will remove three types of ingredients used to make some of its private-label beauty and cosmetic products.
Loblaw Companies (TSX: L, Stock Forum) says it's responding to scientific research and to public opinion about potential negative impacts that the ingredients may have on the environment or on customers.
One type of ingredient is micro beads _ commonly used in skin care products _ that can wash through water treatment systems and enter the food chain because they look like fish eggs.
Another of the ingredients targeted for removal is Triclosan, which is common in antibacterial soaps and body washes, toothpastes and some cosmetic products.
The third type of ingredient is a group of chemicals _ called phthalates _ that are used in soaps, shampoos, hair sprays, and nail polishes.
Loblaw says it's aiming to remove the ingredients from its Life Brand and President Choice products by the end of 2018.
Besides Shoppers Drug Mart _ Canada's largest chain of pharmacies _ Loblaw operates the country's largest grocery business, which operates under various banners including Fortinos, Zehrs, Atlantic Superstore, Provigo, and No Frills.
