WATERLOO, Ont. - BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB, Forum) has replaced its head of global sales.

Carl Wiese succeeds John Sims, who joined BlackBerry 18 months ago as part of a series of management changes at the struggling smartphone company.

Wiese comes to BlackBerry from Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO, Forum). He previously held positions at Apple, Avaya, Lucent and Texas Instruments.

Sims joined BlackBerry in January 2014 shortly after BlackBerry installed John Chen as its chairman and chief executive.

BlackBerry said that Sims has left the company but didn't provide details.

Chen has focused on transitioning BlackBerry away from falling handset revenues and towards sales in its software business but revenue in the first quarter of the current financial year were US$21 million below analyst estimates, at US$658 million.
