No one would have guessed back in 2012, when the Canadian tech space was in such serious decline and only made up a razor slice of the Canadian Benchmark Stock Index, that it would make such a forceful comeback so quickly. After all, Nortel was dead, Research in Motion looked like it was choking on its own tongue, and the Canadian markets seemed to be only interested in resources.

Now, nearly 400 technology and innovation companies are listed on TSX and TSXV, from early stage to large-cap with a combined market value of more than $155.0 billion – that’s an increase of 77% from the dismal days of 2012. Amaya Gaming (TSX: AYA, Forum) was the best performer on the S&P/TSX for 2014 after its phenomenal $4.9 deal to acquire PokerStars. Other tech heavyweights like multi-billion market cap Open Text (TSX: OTC, Forum) are flexing their considerable muscle on the world stage – eyes are turning northward again.

Click to enlargeThis surge is the result of a confluence of events, such as the tanking of commodity prices, and an industry of innovators who just don’t give up. One of the major supporters of this disruptive sector is the Canadian Innovation Exchange (“CIX”), a yearly nexus for investors, innovative companies, entrepreneurs and facilitators looking to push economic growth and drive the development and implementation of new ideas.

Click to enlargeSince its inception in 2007, CIX has gained an international reputation as being the place where deals are done and, with its renowned CIX Top 20 showcase, a necessary spotlight for Canada’s hottest and most innovative companies involved in Digital Media, and Information and Communication Technology wishing to take their venture to the next level. This year’s event, taking place November 17, 2015 at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, will have over 700 attending with industry leaders giving keynote speeches, featured panel discussions including top tech analysts, and 1-1 meetings for investors and Top 20 finalists.

This year is also special as CIX will be adding a Public Investor Day, with its own CIX Public Top 20, on November 18, 2015, which Stockhouse.com is proud to be a title sponsor. The Public Markets Day will do the same thing for publicly traded tech companies as CIX has done for private entities. And if that’s not enough, CIX will be adding a Clean Tech segment to highlight companies making the world a safer and cleaner place.

Click to enlargeI got on the phone with CIX organizer Robert Montgomery, CEO of Achilles Media, to get a deeper picture of CIX and the Canadian tech space – the result is the informative and entertaining podcast below. I highly recommend you have a listen.

You can look forward to a series of updates on Stockhouse regarding CIX, and the Canadian tech space as a whole, building up to the event in November and while the event is on, Stockhouse will be providing up-to-the-minute coverage to keep you in the know.

Here is just a sampling of some innovative Canadian tech companies vying for a spot in the CIX Public Top 20:

FLYHT Aerospace Solutions (TSX: V.FLY, Forum), developer of FLYHTStream™, an application that ensures vital information from an airplane’s black box is streamed to safety in times of emergency.

Lexaria (CSE: LXX, Forum), developer of a patent-pending tech to improve bioavailability of certain fat-soluble molecules.

Orbite Technologies (TSX: ORT, Forum), seeking to take the aluminum world “green”.

TIO Networks (TSX: V.TNC, Forum), successful competitor in the US FinTech sector.

dynaCERT (TSX: V.DYA, Forum), developer of transportable hydrogen generation tech.

Tinkerine Studios (TSX: V.TTD, Forum), leading 3D printing company pioneering the consumer space.
