Mexico is willing to talk about tough issues in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to a report by The Associated Press.
Mexico also wants the energy sector to be included in the agreement.
Mexico largely opted out of formal energy provisions when NAFTA went into effect in 1994.
Duncan Wood, director of the Mexico Institute at the Washington, D.C.-based Wilson Centerr recently told the Toronto Star that many Mexican government officials look forward to putting energy on the negotiating table.
That’s because with the Mexican presidential election coming in 2018, it would give the officials a chance to ensure Mexico’s energy reform policies stay in place regardless of political fortunes.
NAFTA renegotiation talks are set to start on August 16.
