Dispensary sales of medical marijuana in Hawaii are set to start after Maui Grown Therapies received approval from the Department of Health to begin selling cannabis this week.

The dispensary sold medical marijuana to patients for two hours on Tuesday, according to a report by The Associated Press.

“Clearly this is a historic day not just for Maui, but for the state of Hawaii,’’ said Teri Freitas Gorman, director of community relations and patient affairs. “This is the first time in Hawaii that patients will be able to buy lab-tested, quality-assured medical cannabis from a state-licensed dispensary. We are so excited.’’

Hawaii granted eight licenses to eight medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the Hawaiian islands last year.

Honolulu-based dispensary Aloha Green was inspected Tuesday by the Department of Health. It is expected to open sales today.

Meanwhile, back in Canada, Loblaw Companies Ltd. (TSX: T.L, LBLCF, Forum) CEO Galen Weston said recently he isn’t ruling out the possibility of selling recreational marijuana.

Weston told The Canadian Press that the company is keeping a close eye on the federal government’s proposed marijuana legislation.

“It’s fair to say that at this point, based on everything we know today, medical is the place where we see an opportunity,’’ Weston said during Loblaw’s annual meeting.
