3 additional patents (pending) have been filed in 2017. All of this shows the windfall for MGX after 7 years of development that included $50 million of investments by former owner Teck Resources and the Canadian government via SDTC (Sustainable Development Technology Canada) into the ZincNyx technology, which is now nearing commercial deployment. According to the SDTC:

"The energy industry has not yet developed a battery that brings together the perfect combination of power capability, storage capacity and low cost. ZincNyx may have the solution with its Rechargeable Zinc Air Fuel Cell (RZFC) that uses zinc and air – two of the most abundant materials on Earth – as fuel. Used in a fuel cell, zinc provides high energy density, rapid kinetics, chemical stability, and reversibility. This type of fuel cell specifically separates the charge, discharge and storage functions, so that they can be independently tailored to the specific customer’s needs. This project will scale up a technology from its original intended purpose – remote telecommunications site power back-up – to a wider market: microgrid energy storage, where these units can augment or displace diesel power generation."

Most recently, MGX was mentioned in the GreenTechMedia article entitled "ZincNyx Plans Flow Battery Mass Production Within a Year"and it was mentioned that the company is in the final design phase after overcoming a dendrite problem. ZincNyx is now looking to be able to produce 1,000 units annually by this time next year. The price for a 20 kW system is aimed at only $16,000. An equivalent system from Tesla would cost around $56,000, or 3 times as much, making ZincNyx a low-cost alternative in this billion dollar market.

The fully patented system can easily scale up to 100 kW at relatively little additional cost. Above 100 kW of capacity, the system would need a different form factor, such as with a second storage tank.
MGX President and CEO Jared Lazerson told GreenTechMedia that ZincNyx already has a distribution agreement with "a major German group" specializing in diesel generators and off-grid power supplies.

According to Commerzbank, wind power is on an expansion path not only in Germany, but globally.
An Indonesia-based industrial customer, looking to move from diesel to solar-plus-storage, has also already been lined up. Lazerson also noted that the company is already in talks with solar players. ZincNyx aims at mainly selling to commercial and industrial customers looking for backup and load balancing.

Most interestingly, the technology is unrivaled because compared to other flow battery designs (e.g. based on vanadium), ZincNyx is simpler (e.g. only 1 tank instead of 2) and has lower exposure to commodity prices. "This is a low-cost solution, and it will remain a low-cost solution,” Lazerson emphasized. While vanadium pentoxide prices have risen by over 20% in 2017, and ferrovanadium by almost 10%, the zinc price has rarely gone beyond $1.60/pound since 1989, trading at $1.55 last December. The 2 key ingredients in lithium-ion batteries, cobalt and nickel, were priced at $35 and $5.60 per pound, respectively, last month.

Last Sunday, Jared Lazerson was interviewed by Dale Jackson from 77WABC Radio in New York:https://www.mgxminerals.com/media/downloads/WABC_Radio_Interview.mp3
