Canada’s main stock index saw an early lift from gains in the base metals sector in early Monday trading. The energy, financial, technology, and health care sectors all clocked in with initial gains, while industrial, telecom, and utilities were all lower.

Roxgold Inc. (TSX: ROXG) jumped 16% after announcing that it would pursue a business combination creating a low-cost, intermediate global precious metals producer with Fortuna Silver Mines Inc. (NYSE: FSM).

Telsa Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) was the big winner on Wall Street in early Monday trading, with its shares jumping more than 1.3% ahead of the electric-car maker’s earnings report, which would kick off this week’s results from heavyweight technology companies.

Investors will be glued to their trading programs and smartphone apps more than usual this week, as roughly 40% of the S&P 500’s market cap will release reports from Tuesday through Thursday. This includes tech and related heavyweights Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), Google parent Alphabet Inc. (NASDFAQ: GOOG), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: APPL), and Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB). Shares of those companies were mixed in early trading, but soon turned higher by midday.
Asian markets were split while Euro markets closed higher.
