Open Ethernet fabric switch to serve as network centerpiece for all new 46,000 SF purpose-built, Tier III Milwaukee facility offering critical support systems infrastructure

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that its Open Fabric network solutions, featuring the award-winning BlackDiamond® X8 switch, were selected to be the network infrastructure of choice by Data Holdings, developer of the newest 46,000 SF Tier III Data Center facility serving the Midwest, and located in Milwaukee.  

The Data Holdings data center, opening in April 2013, supports ultra-fast Ethernet speeds providing its customers with the best and latest options to meet their mission-critical connectivity needs. The energy efficient LEED certified data center facility will meet all customer needs, from simple co-location to fully staffed and operated network on a 24/7 basis.

The BlackDiamond X8 recently received CRN Magazine's 2012 Tech Innovator of the Year award for its unique scale and innovative features. The core switch provides dense, low latency and high performance switching to meet the growing demand of converged storage, mobility and the cloud.

To meet the present and future connectivity needs of organizations in the region, the Data Holdings data center network will be ready to support SDN applications, including OpenFlow/OpenStack and custom software applications.  The network will scale for wire-speed 40 Gigabit Ethernet inter-switch connections and be ready for 100 GBE. This allows customers to be confident that their next generation requirements will be met or exceeded.

Highlights of the Milwaukee Facility:

  • LEED Silver certified facility includes a high efficiency chilled water system providing tenants with year around free-cooling and a blended PUE of 1.32.
  • A 2N electrical system configuration provides fully redundant power sources from the utility substation to each IT equipment cabinet.
  • The 10MW utility service will support average load densities ranging from 4kW per cabinet position to in excess of 20kW per position.
  • Low utility rates ranging from $0.05 kWh off-peak to $0.07 kWh peak.

Extreme Networks recently announced its high density Super Scale 100GbE and 40 GbE switch modules that offer industry-leading scale, supporting up to a million routes, Virtual Machines (VMs) and flow entries in the network.  Extreme Networks also announced support of Big Switch Networks SDN apps providing progressive and centralized methods to achieve network monitoring and virtualize networks. The 100/40GbE XL modules help to scale the network for a variety of highly virtualized multi-tenant cloud data centers Internet Exchanges (IXCs) and data center core deployments.
