athenahealth Applauds Health Care’s ‘Arrival’ on Fast Company’s Esteemed “Most Innovative Companies” List
athenahealth, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based practice
management, electronic health
record (EHR),
and care
coordination services to medical groups and health systems, today
applauded Fast Company Magazine for its recognition of
leaders within health care as part of its annual Most
Innovative Companies List. athenahealth is ranked #8 among the
World’s
Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Health Care.
With seven health care companies appearing on the publication’s
prestigious ‘50 List’, health care surpassed nearly every sector tracked
by Fast Company, including consumer electronics, retail, finance,
and energy (the ‘style’ industry claimed top honors with nine recognized
companies). In addition, health care claimed two of the top ten
spots—amongst the likes of Nike and Amazon—with three of the top 20 and
four of the top 25.
“No other industry needs innovation more, and historically has been most
resistant to it, than health care. Getting that much real estate on Fast
Company’s ‘50 List’ is huge progress for the industry and is proof
positive that health care is catching up on the innovation front,” said
Jonathan Bush, CEO and Chairman of athenahealth. “We are honored to be
included alongside these other disruptors, each one of which is doing
its part to help fix a broken system. So, let’s take a moment to
celebrate, even though the collective charge remains: keep the
innovation wick burning, be disruptive, be meaningful, and let the
overarching incentive of making health care work as it should for
societal value be a motivator for ongoing excellence.”
In addition to the Top 50, Fast Company ranked The
World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Health Care. A past
‘Fast 50’ winner, athenahealth is the sole health care IT company named
to this list and is recognized for its pioneering cloud-based
services approach to electronic medical records. Fast Company
called out athenahealth’s EHR offering (athenaClinicals®)
as a “system that doctors actually like to use,” and referenced a
growing industry trend wherein physician practices and medical groups
are increasingly replacing traditional software EHR systems to migrate
to the more nimble and service-supported cloud model.
athenahealth’s commitment to breeding innovation in health care is at
the core of the company’s More Disruption Please program (MDP). Launched
in September 2011, MDP counts more than 1,000 members, including
entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, developers, academics, and others
who subscribe to the belief that it will take a massive surge of
disruptive innovation in health care to make the industry work as it
should. Focused on stoking disruption, MDP provides resources to help
accelerate the growth and scale of emerging, innovative member
companies, including counsel, funding, business model and infrastructure
services, networking opportunities, and select occasions to introduce
