Verizon Wireless Teams Up With ReadyAlabama To Help Alabamians Prepare For Severe Weather

Sales Tax Holiday Gives Consumers Added Incentive to Prepare for Severe Weather Events

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of Alabama's second annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, to be held February 22-24, Verizon Wireless is once again teaming up with ReadyAlabama to educate consumers about emergency preparedness throughout the weekend. A program out of Governor Robert Bentley's Office of Faith-Based and Volunteer Services, ReadyAlabama serves as a call to action to all Alabamians to be prepared for severe weather emergencies.

During the sales tax holiday, select Verizon Wireless stores in Alabama will distribute ReadyAlabama's list of items suggested for families to create a severe weather preparedness kit. In addition, customers can bring in their smartphones to these locations throughout the weekend, and have them set up with the latest severe weather applications along with local text alerts.

"Wireless technology serves as a vital communications tool when severe weather strikes," said Jonathan LeCompte – president, Verizon Wireless Georgia/Alabama Region. "Verizon works year-round to ensure our network is prepared, and we're excited to work with ReadyAlabama to help ensure that Alabamians are prepared as well."

During the weekend, items related to weather preparedness, including cell phone chargers and batteries, will be exempted from state sales and use taxes.

Items included in the tax-free status can be found on the Alabama Department of Revenue website. For more information on severe weather preparedness, visit ReadyAlabama's website.
