Consumers Energy Launches "Recycle & Win!"

Spring promotion encourages residents to recycle old refrigerators

JACKSON, Mich., March 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Energy customers have an opportunity to win a $250 prepaid debit card by recycling an outdated refrigerator or freezer between now and the end of May.

The appliance recycling program runs year-round, but during the spring cleaning months of March through May, customers now have an extra reason to recycle outdated units. Consumers Energy customers participating in the free program will enjoy complimentary home pickup of their energy inefficient refrigerator or freezer, a $50 incentive check, and as an extra bonus will be entered in a drawing to win one of four $250 prepaid debit cards.  Customers can apply their winnings toward the purchase of ENERGY STAR® efficient appliances and equipment at local retailers across Michigan.

"Spring cleaning is the ideal time to relieve yourself of that outdated, energy-sucking garage or basement fridge," said Theresa Schmidt, Consumers Energy's appliance recycling program manager. "In addition, you're guaranteed a $50 incentive check and you have a shot at winning one of four $250 prepaid debit cards.  You can use this toward the purchase of energy efficient ENERGY STAR rated appliances and equipment."

Consumers Energy customers can schedule a free pickup by calling (877) 270-3519, or by visiting www.ConsumersEnergy.com/recycle. Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order with an inside measurement between 10 and 30 cubic feet — standard size for most units. A maximum of two units per household a year will be accepted. Incentive checks arrive by mail six to eight weeks after the appliances are picked up.

Recycling refrigerators and freezers creates many benefits for utility customers and the environment. Program participants can save as much as $150 a year through lower electricity costs by having an older refrigerator or freezer hauled away. These units are typically kept in basements and garages for extra cold storage, which is often unnecessary. Additionally, recycling a single unit repurposes more than 188 pounds of materials such as foam, glass and metal for future use. This has the same beneficial environmental impact of removing two cars from the road for a year.

Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), provides natural gas and electricity to nearly 6.8 million of Michigan's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
