Enphase Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENPH), announced today its donation of the Enphase Microinverter System to Team West Virginia for the biennial 2013 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Team West Virginia’s PEAK house--named for Preserving Energy through Appalachian Knowledge--will reflect the region’s rustic Appalachian culture and history plus integrate modern solar microinverters and monitoring technology.

"We are particularly enthusiastic to see Team West Virginia’s application of solar energy into a prominent coal mining region in the United States."

"There is no doubt that coal turns the lights on. However, we believe that using solar energy in residential locations enables coal to keep the lights on longer," explained James Carrier, a student at the Engineering College of West Virginia University. "Our goal is to demonstrate that if we start lowering the demand on the grid by supplementing with residential solar, it can assist electrical companies in larger cities when their power lines get overloaded."

The U.S. Department of Energy challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. The competition will take place at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. from October 3-13, 2013.
