Manulife Financial donates $100,000 to Alberta flood relief efforts; matches employee donations to Canadian Red Cross

TSX/NYSE/PSE: MFC   SEHK:945

WATERLOO, ON, June 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Manulife Financial announced today that it will donate $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to assist with flood relief and recovery efforts in Calgary and southern Alberta. Canada's largest insurer will also match employee donations towards the efforts to the Canadian Red Cross.

"Our thoughts are with our employees, advisors and customers affected by the flooding in Alberta," said Marianne Harrison, Senior Executive Vice-President and General Manager, for the Canadian Division of Manulife. "We hope for their safety and send our best wishes and support to them for the recovery efforts that lie ahead."

More than 175,000 Albertans were evacuated from their homes during the worst flooding in the province's history over the past week, including more than 75,000 in the City of Calgary. Although the waters have begun to recede, many residents are still not able to return home.

Volunteers from the non-profit Canadian Red Cross continue to respond on multiple fronts, providing critical services including family reunification, shelter support, and registration for evacuees. The Red Cross is also supporting 10 shelters in affected communities, and has mobilized highly trained volunteers and staff from across the country to support ongoing outreach and relief activities in affected communities.

"We applaud the efforts of all of the volunteers who are helping their fellow Canadians get through this difficult time," added Ms. Harrison.

All funds collected by the Canadian Red Cross - more than $5 million to date - will go directly to those affected by the flood.
