Illinois & Regional Major-Metro Construction Activity Experienced a 47.5% Increase Year-Over-Year, BidClerk Data Shows

For major-metro regions in Illinois and surrounding areas, including Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, IL; Champaign-Urbana, IL; Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, IL; Peoria, Rockford, Springfield, IL, and St. Louis, MO, the BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) reports that combined public and private construction increased 47.5% in a year-over-year analysis. This compares to a 29.4% increase in year-over-year construction activity that the BCI reported in the 1st quarter of 2013. Also, in a year-over-year comparison, private and public construction projects increased 15.5% and 58.6%, respectively. The total value of all the major-metro Illinois projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $4,135,829,790.

In BCI’s quarter-over-quarter analysis for the 2nd quarter of 2013, there was an increase in overall construction activity of 14.4% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. Private and public construction activity increased 24.9% and 12.1% respectively.

The Chicago region experienced a 57.6% increase in combined public and private construction activity compared to one year ago. In a quarter-over-quarter analysis for Chicago’s combined public and private construction activity, BCI’s 2nd quarter 2013 data showed that there was an increase in construction activity of 11.8% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013.

In the St. Louis region, a year-over-year analysis revealed an increase of 48.5% in construction activity compared to a 17.7% increase reported by the BCI in the 1st quarter of 2013. In a quarter-over-quarter analysis, the St. Louis region experienced a 22.6% increase in the 2nd quarter of 2013.

Among the high-profile projects that BidClerk reported on for the 2nd quarter 2013 was Northwestern University’s Technological Institute J-Wing Addition in Evanston, IL. (2288710 BidClerk ID). The six-stories-tall, 42,248 sq. ft. structure will feature educational and laboratory spaces along with a multi-story atrium. The project value is $27,000,000. It began construction in May 2013, with a target completion date of December 2014. The architect for the project is FLAD Architects (Madison, WI). The contract for general contracting was awarded to Pepper Construction (Barrington, IL).
