Life Technologies Opens State-of-the-Art DNA Forensics Laboratory in India

ATYR

CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE) today announced the launch of its first state-of-the-art forensics laboratory. Located in Gurgaon, India, the new Life Forensics Laboratory will provide much needed high-throughput DNA profiling services in India to help accelerate the sampling process, while saving time and money.

The Life Forensics Laboratory located in Gurgaon is equipped with the most advanced DNA testing systems and qualified experienced staff to facilitate a broad range of DNA testing including paternity testing, kinship testing, DNA profiling for database generation, and forensic DNA analysis.

"Life Technologies DNA Forensics Laboratory will reduce the burden on existing Forensic System and address the requirements of DNA database generation for un-identified dead bodies or other crime investigations," said Devashish Ohri, Managing Director of Life Technologies South Asia.  "We are looking forward to partnering with the State and Central Government laboratories to assist in the establishment of a DNA database project."

Last year, conviction rates for violent crimes in India increased overall by 25 percent, with 21.3 percent of those crimes being committed against women. The country has 28 laboratories dedicated to forensic DNA investigation, however, many of them have sample backlogs;  including the State of Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory, which in January of this year reported a backlog of 862 criminal cases.

"DNA technology has widely been accepted as the most effective crime fighting tool among law enforcement agencies for a variety of applications, including sexual assault, missing persons and disaster victim identification," said Nadia Altomare, Vice President and General Manager for Life Technologies Human Identification Business. "It's also the primary technology used for performing paternity and kinship testing."

The Life Forensics Laboratory will be meeting international standards for DNA testing.  It is equipped with state of the art world DNA testing instruments that have the ability to process thousands of samples quickly and meeting the significant needs in this area.

"The Forensic laboratories in India have been using Life Technologies reagents and instruments for more than 15 years. Opening up of a laboratory shows strong commitment by Life Technologies to partner with Government agencies in this vital area. I am sure this lab would bring more efficiency and improve the available forensic capabilities," said Dr. J. R. Gaur, Principal Scientific Officer (Life Science) Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India and Former Director of State Forensic Science Laboratory.

Life Technologies operates as Invitrogen Bioservices India Pvt. Ltd. in India and commenced operations in the year 2005 with its head office in Bangalore.
