In support of the 50 Years Forward commemoration of the civil rights
movement events of 1963 in Birmingham, Regions
Financial Corporation (NYSE:RF) is hosting a panel discussion
focused on the past, present and future of civil and human rights. The
event will be webcast and available to the public on regions.com.
Titled "Beyond Suffering and Suffrage: The Past, Present and Future of
International Civil and Human Rights,” the preeminent panel will be
moderated by Gayle King, co-host of "CBS This Morning" and
editor-at-large of O, the Oprah Magazine. Distinguished panelists
are former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Rep. Eddie
Bernice Johnson, former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones and retired U.S.
District Judge U.W. Clemon.
“This week all of us at Regions join with our community to commemorate a
pivotal time in our nation’s history,” said Grayson Hall, chairman,
president and CEO of Regions Financial. “While we remember the past, we
also look to the future as we embrace the spirit of 50 Years Forward. It
is our privilege to provide a forum for our customers and the
communities we serve to engage in productive dialogue about civil and
human rights, and we thank our distinguished guests and panelists for
sharing their experience and insight.”
The weekend of Sept. 13-15, 2013, has been designated as Empowerment
Weekend in Birmingham to commemorate the events of 1963, particularly
the tragic bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The panel
discussion hosted by Regions provides perspective on the Birmingham
experience and its impact on furthering the cause of civil and human
rights in the nation and around the world.
“In 1963, the nation watched as tragedy struck and turmoil flared in my
hometown of Birmingham, Alabama,” said Condoleezza Rice, former U.S.
Secretary of State. “We have come a long way since those days but there
is still work to do. This week, we will remember the sacrifices of our
past and celebrate our progress but most importantly we will reaffirm
our bright expectations of the future.”
Prior to the panel discussion, special guests Alabama Gov. Robert
Bentley and Birmingham Mayor William Bell will provide greetings and
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will deliver remarks on
behalf of the White House.
The panel discussion will be held on Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. CDT. A live
webcast of the event will be available to the public on the Regions
Financial web site at regions.com/fiftyyearsforward.
A satellite uplink will be available to journalists.
